The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
